Welcome to the
Green Energy Justice Cooperative (GEJC)
Illinois’s first community-owned solar cooperative. We bring clean energy and economic power to our communities through collective ownership.
As the nation’s largest non-utility-based cooperative solar project, we’re building a 9-megawatt solar installation that will power approximately 1,200 homes. Join us in creating a more sustainable and equitable future for Illinois’ communities.
Our Story
Founded in 2023 by Blacks in Green, the Green Energy Justice Cooperative (GEJC) represents an innovative approach to community-based clean energy. As a multiracial, multiclass, intergenerational, and Black and Latinx-led cooperative, we build more than solar panels: we create pathways to economic independence and environmental justice.
Our 9 megawatts of solar power in Winfield and Naperville Townships are a testament to what communities can achieve when they come together. It’s more than clean energy: it’s about taking control of our energy future.

Our Vision
We strive to achieve economic, political, and educational independence for afroamericans and low-income communities through energy sovereignty.
